Abridged version of the story.

A married couple lived on a lonely spot far from other people. When the man was out on his hunting-ground his place of refuge used to be a snow-hut. Once, when he was stopping in it, he saw his wife running about quite naked. Greatly excited, he hastened home, but found his wife inside the house, sitting quietly with her baby, without having stirred. The man now went raving mad; and the wife, frightened at seeing him in such a state, fled from the house with her child. When at the very point of starvation she chanced to catch a partridge, but seeing a terrible bald-headed bear approaching, she threw the bird to him and made her escape. Afterwards, when she had built herself a hut on the shore, she always got an ample supply of newly-killed seals, which used to come drifting in, being gifts from the grateful bear.

Kigdlinararsuk

Kigdlinararsuk sought vengeance for his sister’s murder by acquiring an amulet to enhance his boat’s swiftness. Guided by advice, he visited two old women. The second provided him with a dried Merganser amulet, which he discreetly embedded in his boat’s prow. After refining its speed to surpass a flying Merganser, he finally set out to face his enemies, determined and prepared.

Kigdlinararsuk, in order to avenge the murder of his sister, went out in search of an old woman who could assist him in getting an amulet for giving swiftness to a boat. The first one he came to replied, “I have grown rather old to no purpose (viz., without having acquired wisdom), I am only clever in…, but farther north I have an elder sister more cunning than I; first try thy luck with her, and if thou dost not succeed I’ll see what can be done.” He then went farther, and came to another old hag, who gave him for an amulet a small bit of a dried Merganser (Mergus serrator). This he inserted in the prow of the boat with such care that no marks or joints were visible. Twice he tried it before the boat appeared swift enough to run down a flying Merganser, and not till then did he start to encounter his adversaries.

An angakok flight

A great angakok, being once called upon to perform a conjuration, took a thong of seal-skin, and having in one end cut a hole for his toe, he twisted it round his body, and made fast the other end to his head. When the lamps had been all extinguished, he was lifted up, and soaring about the house he made the roof lift and give way to him. Having escaped through the opening he flew to the inland, and came to a house inhabited only by women, but as soon as he tried to approach any of them the house-pillar (their enchanted husband) began to emit sparks of fire and lean towards him.

The next time he flew to the inland he was seized hold of by the inlanders, who essayed to play at ball with him, hurling him backwards and forwards between them till he was nearly dead, when he called his tornak, who quickly rescued him. The third time he came to his sister, who had disappeared many years before, but whom he now found married to an inlander; she gave him a piece of reindeer-skin as a token to take home with him in order to convince people of his really having been with her.

The barren wife

Kujavarsuk, born through a magical pact with a shaman, became a gifted hunter, sustaining his community with abundant seals. A sorcerer, angered by a slight, created a shapeshifting tupilak to torment Kujavarsuk, but it was thwarted by Kujavarsuk’s protective amulet. The tupilak, enraged, turned on its maker, killing him. Kujavarsuk lived unbothered, providing for his people until his peaceful death.

This very popular tale has been collated from three copies agreeing in all essential particulars.

A man had a wife who begat him no children. The husband, who was envious of all the people who had children, one day told her to make herself trim and nice, and walk on to a certain spot where an old man, who had given up seal-hunting, had his fishing-place. This old man, however, was a great magician. The next day, while he sat fishing in his kayak, a little way off the shore, she appeared on the beach dressed in her best. But as the old man, afraid of her husband, would not approach her, she soon returned. The husband himself now went to the old man, and promised him half of his “catch” if he could think of some means whereby to get children. When the wife appeared on the beach the next day, the old man instantly made for the shore, and went up to her.

From this day forwards the husband always put by half of the seals he caught for the old man: and when he noticed that his wife was enceinte, he asked the old man to take up his abode in their house; upon which he rejoined, “Thy wife will bear thee a son. Tomorrow when thou goest out kayaking thou must row to the birds-cliff and get hold of a bird, which he shall use for an amulet.” On the following day, when the husband had brought the bird, the old man went on, “Farther, thou must fetch a hollow stone, of a black colour, on which the sun has never shone;” and when he had also brought this, the old man said, “Finally, thou must go to thy grandmother’s grave and bring home her collar-bone.” When all these things had been gathered, the wife brought forth a son, who was named Kujavarsuk by the old man, and the stone was put close to his feet, but the bird was stuck up above the window. The old man now told the father to provide a kayak for the boy as soon as he should be able to make use of it, and have it ready fitted up with utensils and all other requisites for the hunt. When the boy grew up, the father made the kayak; and even before the skins with which it had been covered had time to dry, it was put in the water, and the boy being placed in it, they shoved it off the beach. The old man told what would happen to him, saying, “The very first time he goes out, one of the ‘quiet’ seals will rise to the surface, and he shall not return home till he has captured ten of them; and in future he will always get ten seals whenever he goes out kayaking. The old man and the father now followed him closely, but as soon as they left him at a little distance a seal popped its head above the water, and he paddled on and harpooned it, at which the old man was quite transported; and from this time the boy began to hunt. When he was grown up he took two wives; and he became of great use to his house-fellows and neighbours. In times of need he was their only provider. One winter the sea was frozen over very early, and ere long there was only one opening in the ice left, right in front of their dwelling-place; out of this he every day got his ten seals. Later on the cleft became so narrow that his kayak touched the edge of the ice with both ends, and at last it altogether closed up. The whole sea was now covered with ice; great perplexity came over the people, and they deliberated whether it would not be necessary to call in an angakok. One person mentioned that in the summer-time he had seen the widow Igdlutsialik’s daughter practising the angakok art in a lake. Kujavarsuk at once sent off a messenger to let her know that he would give her a large seal-skin in return if she would make the ice break up. However, she declined to do so. They next tried to get her to return by offering her different things, such as clothes and lamps; but still she refused. Then some one brought her a handful of beads, which happened to take her fancy; and she said to her mother, “Bring my summer dress.” When she had put it on, she walked down to the water-side and disappeared among the loose ice-blocks scattered all along the sea-shore. Shortly afterwards the spectators heard a splash, and she was seen no more. She now remained in the depths of the ocean for three days, and at the bottom of the sea she had a struggle with the old woman (viz., the arnarkuagssak of the Eskimo mythology), to make her let loose the animals of the sea, which she purposely detained, and kept swimming about underneath her lamp; and when at length she had managed to conciliate her, she again returned to the earth. On the evening of the third day she reappeared among the ice-blocks on the beach, and let the people know that she wanted every other seal that was caught, for herself, of those with the most beautiful skin, as well as of the common fiord seals. As yet, however, the sea was all covered with ice. But on the following morning, at dawn, the ice broke up, and an opening appeared near the houses; and after a while it had become so wide that the men could put down their kayaks. Each of them soon caught two seals, but Kujavarsuk as usual got ten, which made the others very jealous. It now happened one day that his wives had only put by a piece of the back instead of the briskets for his mother’s brother, who was expected to come home later in the evening. He was offended at this want of consideration on their part, and resolved to make (by help of sorcery) a tupilak for Kujavarsuk. To this end he gathered bones of all sorts of animals, out of which he fashioned it in such manner that it could take the shape of different animals, of birds as well as of seals; and having stirred them into life, he let it loose, and ordered it to persecute Kujavarsuk. First it dived down into the sea, and again appeared to him in the shape of a seal; but he was then already on his way home, and when it approached him he was in the very act of drawing his kayak on the shore. The same thing happened on the second and the third day. The tupilak now determined to pursue him to his house, and then frighten him to death. It transformed itself into a toogdlik [the largest sea-fowl in Greenland, Colymbus glacialis, or Great Northern Diver], and commenced shrieking outside the house. Kujavarsuk went out; but as he could not be brought to look at it, the charm would not work. It then resolved to go underground, and pop up into the room. However, it succeeded no better this time, but rose at the back of the house; and just as it was about to climb up the roof, it met his own amulet-bird, which at once set about picking and scratching its face. It now, however, turned desperate, and thought, “Why did this miserable fool of a man ever make me!” and in the height of its wrath it turned against its maker. Diving down into the water near his fishing-place, it emerged right beneath his kayak, and fairly upsetting it, devoured him on the spot. It now fled far away from the habitations of man, out on the roaring ocean. Kujavarsuk afterwards remained unmolested, and died at a very old age.

There are other tales of Kujavarsuk among the Greenlanders. The following may be taken as a sample of the whole.

When Kujavarsuk had grown a man he travelled to a place in the north, where he had had a namesake who died from starvation. The people of those parts followed the pursuit of whale-fishery, and here Kujavarsuk made friends with a youth. Those two were always trying to outdo each other, but Kujavarsuk was more than a match for him. In the beginning of winter they were to try who could detect the first whale. Kujavarsuk had never seen any animal of this kind before. He had by this time taken up his abode with an old man, who said to him, “When a whale is near at hand, it cannot be mistaken; its breathing is at once roaring and hissing.” And Kujavarsuk was always on the alert to catch sight of them. One fine morning, when it was quite calm, the old man said, “If the whales are going to be early this year, they’ll turn up on a day like this.” Kujavarsuk remained out in his kayak all day, listening for the signal, but could not perceive any such sound at all. In the evening he returned after a fair hunt, and tried to go to sleep, but was not able. About midnight he rose, and stepping out he heard a sound of heavy breathing from the sea coming closer to him, and stopping at the mouth of the bay; and on entering he said, “I wonder what sound it was I heard just now.” The old man walked out, and returned, saying, “Why, that’s just the whale blowing; he did not miss his day.” Kujavarsuk now went to rest, and slept soundly. But early in the morning his young friend was heard calling without, “Kujavarsuk, the whale is blowing! thou art too late!” But the old man made answer, “Thou art mistaken, he knew it yesterday, and has just gone to sleep.” Soon after, the friend said, “Now let us see which of us is the best hand at making bladders for our whale-catching.” And next day they went out together to procure seals for this purpose. Close to land Kujavarsuk got two spotted ones, but his friend got none at all. As the weather continued fine, and more whales appeared, the boats were sent out on the watch. At first Kujavarsuk concluded he was not to be of the party because he had no women to row his boat, but on seeing all the hunters set off along with their housemates, women and all, he, too, felt a strong desire to go; and getting hold of some children, he manned his boat with them, and left shore. The other boats, meantime, had stood farther out to sea, and the people shouted to him, “If thou art on the look-out for the whale thou must come out to us; he’ll never rise where thou art now.” But he did not mind them, and stayed where he was, his mother having said, “I conceived thee on the sea-shore, and for this reason thou shalt watch thy chance near it.” In a little while a whale appeared close by; he at once pursued and harpooned it, and the beast could not even draw his bladder under the water. Again the others cried, “If thou wilt not lose it thou must pursue it more seawards.” But he only replied, “All the animals of the sea that I am going to pursue will seek towards shore, close to my dwelling-place.” And thus he was left alone to kill it all by himself. Whether he got any more than this one is not known; but perhaps he even got his ten of them. When spring came on he returned to his former home, where he still found the old fisherman alive, and to him he presented all the whalebone; the longest and best splits having been all reserved for him.

Domingo’s Cat

The cat secured a castle by tricking a giant, ensuring Domingo’s happiness. With his mission complete, the cat vanished to aid another in need.

The cat went out into the jungle and dug and dug. Every time he dug he turned up silver pieces. The cat took a number of these home to his master so that he could purchase food. The rest of the pieces of silver the cat carried to the king.

The next day the cat dug up pieces of gold and carried them to the king. The next day he carried pieces of diamonds.

“Where do you get these rich gifts? Who is sending me such wonderful presents?” asked the king.

The cat replied, “It is my master, Domingo.”

Now the king had a beautiful daughter. He thought that this man Domingo must be the richest man in the whole kingdom. He decided that his daughter should marry him at once. He made arrangements for the wedding through the cat.

“I haven’t any clothes to wear at the wedding,” said Domingo when the cat told him that he was to marry the daughter of the king.

“Never mind about that. Just leave it to me,” replied the cat.

The cat went to the king and said, “O King, there has been a terrible fire in the tailor shop where they were making the wedding garments of my master, Domingo. The tailor and all of his assistants were burned to death, and the entire outfit of my master Domingo was destroyed. Hasn’t your majesty something which you could lend him to wear at the wedding?” The king sent the richest garments which his wardrobe afforded. Domingo was clothed in state ready for the wedding.

“I have no palace to which to take my bride,” said Domingo to the cat.

“Never mind. I’ll see about it at once,” replied the cat.

The cat went into the forest to the great castle where the giant dwelt. He marched straight up to the big giant and said, “O Giant, I wish to borrow your castle for my master Domingo. Will you not be so kind as to lend it to me a little while?”

The giant was very much insulted. “No, indeed, I’ll not lend my castle to you or your master Domingo or anybody else,” he shouted in his most terrible voice.

“Very well, then,” replied the cat. He changed the giant to a piece of bacon in the twinkling of an eye and devoured him on the spot.

The palace of the giant was a very wonderful palace. There was one room decked with silver, and one room decked with gold, and one room decked with diamonds. A beautiful river flowed by the garden gate.

As Domingo and his bride sailed down the river to the garden gate in the royal barge, they saw the cat sitting in the window singing. After that they never saw him again. He disappeared in the jungle and went to make some other poor man rich. Perhaps he will come your way some day. Who knows? “Quem sabe?” they say in Brazil.

Once long ago there lived a king who had a stupid son. His father sent him to school for many years hoping that he might learn something there. His teachers all gave him up as hopelessly stupid, and with one accord they said, “It is no use trying to teach this lad out of books. It is just a waste of our valuable time.”

At length the king called together all the wisest men of his kingdom to consult them as to the best way to make the prince wise and clever. They talked the matter over for a year and a day.

It was the unanimous opinion of the wise men of the kingdom that the lad should be sent on a journey through many lands. In this way he might learn many of the things which his teachers had not been able to teach him out of books.

Accordingly the prince was equipped for his journey. He was given fine raiment, a splendid black horse upon which to ride, and a great bag full of money. Thus prepared, he started forth from the palace one bright morning with the blessing of the king, his father, and of all the wise men of the kingdom.

The prince journeyed through many lands. In one country he learned one thing, and in another country he learned another thing. There was no country or kingdom so small or poor that it did not have something to teach the prince. And the prince, though he had been so insufferably stupid at his books, learned the lessons of his journey with an open mind.

After long wanderings the prince arrived at a city where there was an auction going on. A singing bird was being offered for sale. “What is the special advantage of this singing bird?” asked the prince.

“This bird, at the command of its owner, will sing a song which will put to sleep any one who listens to it,” was the reply.

The prince decided that the bird was worth purchasing.

The next thing which was offered for sale was a beetle. “What is the special advantage of this beetle?” asked the prince.

“This beetle will gnaw its way through any wall in the world,” was the reply.

The prince purchased the beetle.

Then a butterfly was offered for sale. “What is the special advantage of owning this butterfly?” asked the prince.

“This butterfly is strong enough to bear upon its wings any weight which is put upon them,” was the answer.

The prince bought the butterfly. With his bird and beetle and butterfly he travelled on and on until he became lost in the jungle. The foliage was so dense that he could not see his way, so he climbed to the top of the tallest tree he saw. From its summit he spied in the distance what looked like a mountain; but, when he had journeyed near to it, he saw that it was really the wall which surrounds the land of the giants.

A great giant whose head reached to the clouds stood on the wall as guard. A song from the singing bird put this guard to sleep immediately. The beetle soon had gnawed an entrance through the wall. Through this opening the prince entered the land of the giants.

The very first person whom the prince saw in the land of the giants was a lovely captive princess. The opening which the beetle had made in the wall led directly to the dungeon in which she was confined.

The prince had learned many things on his journey, and among the lessons he had learned was this one: “Always rescue a fair maiden in distress.” He immediately asked what he could do to rescue the beautiful captive princess.

“You can never succeed in rescuing me, I fear,” replied the princess. “At the door of this palace there is a giant on guard who never sleeps.”

“Never mind,” replied the prince. “I’ll put him to sleep.”

Just at that moment the giant himself strode into the dungeon. He had heard voices there. “Sing, my little bird, sing,” commanded the prince to his singing bird.

At the first burst of melody the giant went to sleep there in the dungeon, though he had never before taken a wink of sleep in all his life.

“This beetle of mine has gnawed an entrance through the great wall which surrounds the land of the giants,” said the prince to the captive princess. “To escape we’ll not have to climb the high wall.”

“What of the guard who stands on top of the wall with his head reaching up to the clouds?” asked the princess. “Will he not spy us?”

“My singing bird has put him to sleep, too,” replied the prince. “If we hurry out he will not yet be awake.”

“I have been confined here in this dungeon so long that I fear I have forgotten how to walk,” said the princess.

“Never mind,” replied the prince. “My butterfly will bear you upon his wings.”

With the lovely princess borne safely upon the butterfly’s wings the prince swiftly escaped from the land of the giants. The giant on the wall yawned in his sleep as they looked up at him. “He is good for another hour’s nap,” remarked the prince.

The prince returned to his father’s kingdom as soon as he could find the way back. He took with him the lovely princess, and the singing bird, and the gnawing beetle, and the strong-winged butterfly. His father and all the people of the kingdom received him with great joy. “Never again will the prince of our kingdom be called stupid,” said the wise men when they heard the account of his adventures. “With his singing bird and his gnawing beetle and his strong-winged butterfly he has become the cleverest youth in the land.”

The Mam

A hunter neglected to pray or offer copal to Mam, the guardian of animals, wounding many creatures. Summoned by Mam, he was tasked with tending the sick animals and taught sacred practices, including prayers to the Morning Star, Xulab, and burning copal. The hunter learned farming skills and received seeds before returning to earth, where he prospered by honoring Mam’s teachings and rituals.

Once there was a man who never burnt copal or prayed to the Mam when he went out hunting. He was a bad shot, and many of the animals at which he shot ran off wounded. Mam was vexed about this, so he sent a boy to summon the man to his presence. The boy found the hunter in the forest and made him shut his eyes. When he opened them again, he found himself in the presence of the Mam. The Mam asked him why he wounded so many animals and did not burn copal or pray to him. The man said that he knew no better. As a punishment the Mam made the man live there with him and tend to the sick and wounded animals. Where the Mam lives in the middle of a mountain, there are a number of pens in which the wild animals are kept.

There is one pen for the small deer, another for the large deer, and yet another for the peccary. In short there is a special pen for every kind of wild animal.

One day while the man was there, curing the sick animals, two other humans were brought up to Mam for not having burnt copal. The Mam kept them there in his house during the night. Early the next morning he took all three of them and showed them a hunter on earth who was offering copal to the Morning Star and the Mam. In this manner they learnt what they must do to get plenty of game.

When they had learnt, the Mam sent the two back to the world, but first he asked them what game they wanted. Then the Mam sent the third man to the pens and told him to release two peccaries and three curassows. As soon as the two men got back to earth and opened their eyes, they saw the two peccaries and the three curassows, and shot them. The other man remained with the Mam, curing the sick and wounded animals.

The Mam taught him how to pray and burn copal. First, he must pray to the Morning Star as it comes up above the horizon; for the Morning Star, Xulab, is the owner of all the animals. Further, when the man goes to the forest, he must again pray and burn copal to the Mam; for the Mam look after all the animals for the Morning Star. The Mam taught the man how to work a milpa, for before this the man had not known how. The Mam also taught him how to pray and burn copal so that he might get a good crop. The man tired of living with the Mam, and wanted to go back to earth and his family. The Mam wanted him to stay, but the man was so anxious to go home that the Mam consented. However, before the man went, the Mam gave him the seed of all the plants he wanted to sow, beans, maize, cassava, and others. When the man got back to earth, he remembered all that the Mam had taught him, and consequently his milpa always yielded abundantly. Whenever he went out to shoot, he always got plenty of game as he knew exactly how to pray and burn copal. Now it is said that the Mam used to wear sandals of moleskin, and his seat was the shell of an armadillo.

The Apple of Youth

A king with five daughters seeks husbands for them. A stranger wins the youngest’s hand and suggests a novel way for all daughters to choose their suitors. After marriage, the king demands a magical apple granting eternal youth. The youngest son-in-law braves an ogress’s city to retrieve the true apple, restoring the king’s youth. Named heir, he ascends the throne after the king’s death.

There once lived a king who had five daughters and no sons. They grew up. He wanted them to marry, but they would not have any of the young men of the city. A youth came from a far country and stood under the castle, beneath the window of the youngest daughter. She saw him, and told her father she would marry him.

“Bring him in,” said the King.

“He will come to-morrow.”

“God be praised,” said the King, “that you are pleased with us.”

The young man answered, “Give me your daughter for a wife.”

“Advise me,” said the King.

The stranger said, “Go and wait till to-morrow.”

The next day the young man said to the King: “Make all the inhabitants of the city come out. You will stand with the clerks at the entrance to the gate. Dress your daughters and let them choose their husbands themselves.”

The people began to come out. The eldest daughter struck one of them on the chest with an apple, and they said: “That daughter has chosen a husband. Bravo!” Each one of the daughters thus selected a husband, and the youngest kept hers. A little while afterward, the King received a visit from one of his sons-in-law, who said to him, “What do you want us to give you?”

“I’ll see what my daughters want,” he answered. “Come back in six days.”

When they went to see their wives the King said to them, “I will ask of you a thing about which they have spoken to me.”

“What is it? We are anxious to know.”

“It is an apple, the odor of which gives to the one who breathes it youth, no matter what his age may be.”

“It is difficult,” they answered. “We know not where it can be found.”

“If you do not bring it to me, you cannot marry my daughter.”

They kept silent, and then consulted with each other. The youngest said to them, “Seek the means to satisfy the King.”

“Give us your advice—-“

“Father-in-law, to-morrow we shall bring you the apple.” His brothers-in-law added: “Go out. To-morrow we will meet you outside the city.”

The next day they all five met together. Four of them said to the other, “Advise us or we will kill you.”

“Cut off your fingers,” he said.

The first one began, and the three others did the same. The youngest one took them and put them into his game-bag, and then he added, “Wait near the city till I come back.”

He went out into the desert and came to the city of the ogress. He entered, and found her ready to grind some wheat. He said to the ogress, “Show me the apple whose color gives eternal youth to the old man who smells it.”

“You are in the family of ogres,” she said. “Cut a hair from the horse of their King. When you go into the garden cast this hair into the fire. You will find a tree, from which you must pick five fruits. When plucking them do not speak a word, and keep silence on your return. It is the smallest fruit that possesses the magic power.”

He took the apple and went back to the city, where he found his companions. He concealed in his breast the wonderful fruit, and gave the others to his brothers-in-law, one to each. They entered the palace of the King, who was overjoyed to see them, gave them seats, and asked them, “Have you brought it or not?”

“We have brought it,” they answered.

He said to the eldest, “Give me your apple first.”

He took a mirror in his left hand, and the fruit in the right hand, bent down, and inhaled the odor of the apple, but without results. He threw it down upon the ground. The others gave him their apples, with no more success.

“You have deceived me,” he said to them. “The apples do not produce the effect that I sought.”

Addressing, then, the stranger, he said, “Give me your apple.”

The other son-in-law replied: “I am not of this country. I will not give you my fruit.”

“Give it to me to look at,” said the King. The young man gave it to him, saying, “Take a mirror in your right hand and the apple in your left hand.”

The King put the apple to his nose, and, looking at his beard, saw that it became black. His teeth became white. He grew young again. “You are my son,” he said to the young man. And he made a proclamation to his subjects, “When I am dead he shall succeed me on the throne.” His son-in-law stayed some time with him, and after the death of the King he reigned in his place and did not marry the other daughters of the King to his companions.

Adventure of Sidi Mahomet

Mouley Mahomet summoned the saint Sidi Adjille, promising safety through symbolic pledges. Upon arriving in Morocco, Sidi Adjille requested only that his mule’s feed-bag be filled with wheat. Despite emptying all the Sultan’s granaries and silos, the task remained unfulfilled. Angered, the Sultan ordered his execution, but as Sidi Adjille prayed and washed, he miraculously vanished, evading capture and returning to his home in Tagountaft.

One day Mouley Mahomet summoned Sidi Adjille to come to Morocco, or he would put him in prison. The saint refused to go to the city until the prince had sent him his chaplit and his “dalil” as pledges of safety. Then he started on the way and arrived at Morocco, where he neither ate nor drank until three days had passed. The Sultan said to him: “What do you want at my palace? I will give it to you, whatever it may be.”

Sidi Adjille answered, “I ask of you only one thing, that is, to fill with wheat the feed-bag of my mule.”

The prince called the guardian, and said to him, “Fill the feed-bag of his mule.”

The guardian went and opened the door of the first granary and put wheat in the feed-bag until the first granary was entirely empty. He opened another granary, which was soon equally exhausted, then a third, and so on in this fashion until all the granaries of the King were emptied. Then he wanted to open the silos, but their guardian went and spoke to the Sultan, together with the guardian of the granaries.

“Lord,” they said, “the royal granaries are all empty, and yet we have not been able to fill the feed-bag of the saint’s mule.”

The donkey-drivers came from Fas and from all countries, bringing wheat on mules and camels. The people asked them,

“Why do you bring this wheat?”

“It is the wheat of Sidi Mahomet Adjille that we are taking.” The news came to the King, who said to the saint, “Why do you act so, now that the royal granaries are empty?” Then he called together the members of his council and wanted to have Sidi Mahomet’s head cut off. “Go out,” he said to him.

“Wait till I make my ablutions” [for prayer], answered the saint.

The people of the makhzen who surrounded him watched him among them, waiting until he had finished his ablutions, to take him to the council of the King and cut off his head. When Sidi Mahomet had finished washing, he lifted his eyes to heaven, got into the tub where was washing, and vanished completely from sight. When the guardians saw that he was no longer there, they went vainly to continue the search at his house at Tagountaft.

The Stolen Woman

A man of Onlad Draabad, fearing for his beautiful wife’s safety, secluded her by the salt sea. However, she was abducted by sailors seeking a bride for their Sultan. With aid from the son of Keij, the husband braved dangerous creatures, guards, and a marine monster to rescue her. After reclaiming riches from a deserted city, they returned home victorious, leaving the ship to his ally.

It is related that a man of the Onlad Draabad married his cousin, whom he loved greatly. He possessed a single slave and some camels. Fearing lest someone should carry off his wife on account of her beauty, he resolved to take her to a place where no one should see her. He started, therefore, with his slave, his camels, and his wife, and proceeded night and day until he arrived at the shore of the great salt sea, knowing that nobody would come there.

One day when he had gone out to see his camels and his slave, leaving his wife alone in the tent, she saw a ship that had just then arrived. It had been sent by a sultan of a far country, to seek in the islands of the salt sea a more beautiful wife for him than the women of his land.

The woman in the tent, seeing that the ship would not come first to her, went out first in front. The people said to her, “Come on board in order to see the whole ship.” She went aboard. Finding her to be just the one for whom they were seeking, they seized her and took her to their Sultan. On his return, the husband, not finding his wife, realized that she had been stolen. He started to find the son of Keij, the Christian. Between them there existed a friendship. The son of Keij said to him: “Bring a ship and seven men, whose guide I will be on the sea. They need not go astray nor be frightened. The city is three or four months’ journey from here.” They set sail in a ship to find the city, and were on the way the time that he had said.

Arriving they cast their anchor near the city, which was at the top of a high mountain. Their chief went ashore and saw a fire lighted by someone. He went in that direction. It was an old woman, to whom he told his story. She gave him news of his wife. They agreed to keep silence between themselves. Then the old woman added: “In this place there are two birds that devour people. At their side are two lions like to them, and two men. All of these keep guard over your wife.”

He bought a sheep, which he killed; then he went to the two birds and threw them a part of it. While they were quarrelling over it he passed by them and came near to the two lions, to which he did the same. Approaching the two men, he found them asleep. He went as far as the place where his wife was in prison, and attracted her attention by scratching her foot. He was disguised and said to her, “I have sought you to tell you something.” He took her by the hand. They both went out, and he swore that if she made the slightest noise he would kill her. He also asked her which was the swiftest boat for the journey. She pointed out the best boat there, and they embarked in it. There were some stones on board, and when he threw one at a ship it was crushed from stem to stern, and all on board perished.

He started to find the son of Keij. While they were at sea a marine monster swallowed them and the ship on which they were sailing. The chief took some pitch and had it boiled in a kettle. The monster cast up the ship on the shore of the sea. They continued their journey, proceeding by the seaside.

Behold one day they came to a deserted city. They desired to take what it contained of riches, silver, and gold. All of a sudden the image of an armed man appeared to them. They could not resist or kill him at first, but finally they destroyed him and took all the riches of the houses. When they arrived near the son of Keij he said to them: “I want only the ship.” So the other man took the treasures and returned home with his wife.
